Pappy's New Boat

This evening Kathleen and I had dinner at home with Dan and his first mate Max before they set sail for San Francisco tomorrow morning. Both seemed in good spirits when I dropped them off at the docks, hopefully the winds will be favorable. You can see more pictures of Dan's new boat Zippy 'The Pinhead' (name soon to be changed) at my Shutterfly albumn.

Dan should re-name the boat "pappy and me and the mariachi's"

Got this update from Elizabeth on Dan's voyage up the coast.

Just received another call from Dan. (Yes his new J92 is called Zippy
but he is registering it under a new name - Pappy and Me.)
He and Max are doing very well. At 2:15 pm they were off the coast of
Santa Barbara. They did not have to pull into the harbor for gas as
the boat is using much less fuel than he had anticipated. In fact, so
far he has only used 5 gals. They will pass Point Conception tonight
which is usually a windy spot. He will probably pull into the harbor at
Moro Bay to refuel in maybe 36 hours.

As they went by Ventura County they experienced 25-35 knots of wind and
gusts to 45 knots coming from the east (starboard). They were sailing
at the time and Dan said they were going 9 knots - probably the max for
his boat. The boom vang broke in all that wind but they fixed it.
This didn't last long and then they went back to gentle breezes but
coming directly at the bow so they are back to motoring again with the
main up. So the trip for the most part has been mellow going 4 1/2 to
5 knots with the exception of the excitement off Ventura.

They made it!! Dan pulled in late Saturday night ahead of schedule. Apparently they had enough gas for the whole trip and back if needed. I don't believe they even made a single stop on the journey.
